Paddle up the Hood River and then ride the current back down!
The spit has great access to both the Hood River and Columbia. If you venture up the Hood River (fun times), be sure to watch for fishermen. The water can also be surprisingly shallow in this area, so later in summer when water levels are lower, you may want to look for deeper waters. The spit is also the de facto dog beach of the waterfront. This can be a pro or a con depedning on your relationship with the animal kingdom.
Access Information
We recommend parking on the Northeast side of the parking lot if possible and pumping up at your car. There is a path on the Northeast side of the parking lot leading down to the Hood River. From here you can either paddle out into the Columbia, or paddle up the Hood River. Be sure to watch out for fishermen!
If it is windy, we recommend not paddling out into the Columbia as this will make for very challenging conditions. The Hood River has decent wind shelter so you are safe paddling there on windy days.
